Some Grocery Stores In UAE Are Charging Residents For Plastic Bags
We are not ready for this! No, we are not.
We're still adjusting with the VAT that was introduced on January 1 this year.
And here comes another news - some grocery stores in the UAE will charge residents every plastic grocery bag they use to purchase products.
It may be a hassle for some, but don't judge this new rule as this is the latest drive of supermarkets to reduce plastic pollution.
In the global context, plastic pollution affects wildlife, wildlife habitat and humans.
This week, Abu Dhabi's Waitrose's stores will collect a fee of 24 fils per plastic bag as part of a 12-week trial (from June 16 to September 8).
Stores which will participate in the initiative are Waitrose Etihad Towers, Waitrose Sun and Sky Reem Island, Waitrose Waitrose Al Zeina, Waitrose Saadiyat Beach Community and Waitrose Eastern Mangroves.
Spinneys, according to a local report, is planning to implement this program while other leading stores such as Lulu Hypermarkets have yet to confirm.
You might want to bring some extra paper bags from your house if all UAE supermarkets implement this.
