UAE Authorities Say WhatsApp Calling Is Just A Rumor, But Residents Have Actually Used It
Updated: Sep 16, 2018
If you heard someone claiming that they were able to call using WhatsApp, don’t believe them.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has denied rumors about WhatsApp calling being used by residents inside the country.
Social media posts claiming these are ‘fake and just rumors,’ an Arabic newspaper reported.
“VoIP services are still a prerogative of the licensed providers who reserve the right to provide such services through their networks. Companies wishing to offer such services must coordinate with the licensed telecom providers in the UAE,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, according to some residents, they have actually used the app to call locally via Wi-Fi only.
