UAE Companies Are Obliged To Pay Salaries For People Under 14-Day Quarantine
A legal expert in the UAE has explained that companies are obliged to pay for employees who undergo home or self-quarantine due to coronavirus.
"If the employer demands or calls upon an employee to be quarantined for a certain number of days after he/she returns to the UAE from leave or official foreign tour, then the employer may be obligated to pay the salary for the number of days the employee has been quarantined, as the said leave is on the instructions of the employer," Ashis Mehta, founder and managing partner of Ashish Mehta and Associates told Gulf News.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emaritizatio, meanwhile, hasn't released a guideline on the payment of salary for private-sector employees who are quarantined due to the new coronavirus.
Employers who will refuse to pay salaries for their employees who are under quarantine violate Article 83 of the Employment Law.
If an employee voluntarily quarantines themselves, they may not be eligible for sick leave salary. But if they are tested positive for Covid-19, they may be eligible for sick leave salary, Gulf News reported.
