Will UAE lift ban on Skype? Officials are in talks.
For the last five months, Skype and the rest of apps with video-calling service have been banned in the country – leaving residents no option but to install paid-for apps or install VPN just to contact their families.
Reports surfaced last night that the authorities are in talks with tech giants Microsoft and Apple on the potential lifting of a ban on Skype and FaceTime.
A top official of the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) was quoted as saying by an Arabic newspaper that “discussions are still ongoing.”
“Microsoft has launched for the first time two data centers in the UAE and that cover the entire Middle East,” Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, director-general of the TRA, said.
